Description
Skybeam is an in-development browser-based graphical interface for Bluesky-driven experiment orchestration, currently being piloted for the In situ and Operando Soft X-ray Spectroscopy (IOS) beamline at NSLS-II. The project is translating IOS X-ray absorption spectroscopy workflows into a guided application for sample preparation, scan configuration, execution, and live monitoring.
This work explores how authenticated web sessions, role-aware interfaces, and workflow-specific UX can make remote-capable Bluesky operation more accessible to new and returning users while preserving the flexibility of the underlying control system. Skybeam is being designed to integrate a modern frontend with Bluesky-aligned services for device and PV discovery, direct device control, streaming updates, reusable presets, and QueueServer-based scan submission.
The talk will present the current IOS pilot architecture, the workflow model, and lessons learned so far from connecting browser-based interfaces to Bluesky services. It will also discuss which patterns may generalize beyond one beamline, what integration questions remain open, and how continued collaboration around QueueServer, Ophyd/Ophyd-Async, Tiled, and interoperable device interfaces can support more accessible experiment orchestration.
