Description
Researchers who use Synchrotron and XFEL radiation sources to conduct their experiments often face challenges with data storage, transfer and analysis due to increasingly large volumes of data. PHOTONIC (Photon Science - Harmonized Online Tools for Open, Navigable, Interactive Computing Framework) led by DESY in collaboration with European X-ray Free Electron Laser (EuXFEL) and Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB) aims to provide a unified data access layer built upon the Bluesky Tiled API. The project seeks to provide access to photon science datasets during and after measurement, supporting full or partial retrieval depending on the needs of a researcher. They will be able to access their data through an API that converts data between different file and data formats, making experimental datasets universally accessible regardless of the software tools they use. The system is designed to allow authenticated data access via Helmholtz ID from any location with an internet connection. Additionally, the project will integrate with widely used data visualization tools such as h5web, and will be made available in the Helmholtz Cloud Portal to fit into existing research infrastructure. This gives scientists flexible access to their beamtime data at every stage of the research process. Whether a researcher is working from their home institution before an experiment, actively conducting an experiment at a facility, or reviewing results after the experiment has concluded, they can access specific slices of their data in a desired format directly from a personal laptop if needed. The project is currently in the initial phase, exploring and validating the aforementioned software Tiled as a viable solution for unified data access.
