DESCRIPTION:The European XFEL is considered to be fully operational since 
 2020. The facility is currently in its harvesting phase\, operating for us
 er experiments and generating numerous scientific results. Looking ahead t
 o the end of the 2030s\, however\, an upgrade and extension of the facilit
 y\, or parts thereof\, will be needed to meet the demands of new scientifi
 c applications and to enable a growing number of user experiments. Options
  under consideration include major changes to the electron accelerator\, a
 s well as new FEL sources\, beamlines and scientific instruments.\nIt is o
 ur aim to present a European XFEL upgrade proposal before the end of the 2
 020s to our Council. An important part of this proposal will be the scienc
 e case for the upgrade. To prepare this case we are organising a series of
  expert meetings and a series of science workshops. \nThe aim of this exp
 ert meeting on X-ray Spectroscopy techniques and applications is to gather
  input on: \n\n         Present day limitations to methods and scien
 tific applications\n         Future options and development of new me
 thods\, and the requirements for these\n         Potential scientific
